Illegal Street Racing

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will not tolerate illegal street racing that occurs on local, county, or state highways. If you see any person that engages in such activity, contact CHP at: 1-800-TELL-CHP.

Illegal street racing is not a new phenomenon. In fact, illegal street racing has been around since Americans first became enamored with the automobile. Over the years, as technology and social media have evolved, so have the vehicles and individuals involved in illegal street racing.

As with many pop culture movies of the past, such as Two-Lane Blacktop, American Graffiti, and Hollywood Knights, the release of the Fast and Furious movies have been noted as the single largest influential factor for introducing illegal street racing to the masses. As the problem with illegal street racing grew exponentially, so did the loss of life. With this, Illegal street racing moved from a simple pop culture phenomenon to a global epidemic.

Many may question categorizing illegal street racing as a global epidemic, however, the statistics do not lie (click here to read illegal street racing statistics presented by the NHRA). The fact remains that there have been hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries, and countless crimes associated with the illegal street racing movement.

The bottom line is that illegal street racing not only hurts those who participate in the illegal act, but also innocent citizens, and the sport/hobby of legal drag racing as a whole. There are safe alternatives to illegal street racing. These alternatives include legal street racing at a drag strip or venue approved by a sponsoring authority.
